The Emosson Dam is situated in the Swiss Alps, near the French border, 1930 meters above sea level, near the Swiss town of Martigny. Completed in 1975, the dam is 180 m high and at its coping is 554 m long with a thickness varying from 9 m (coping) to 48.5 m (footing). About 10km northeast of Payerne, AVENCHES was the capital of Roman Switzerland, at one time supporting a population of 20,000. The main attraction of Bellinzona are the three dominating castles, Castel Grande (or Castel Vecchio or Burg Uri), Castello di Montebello (Burg Schwyz), and Castello di Sasso Corbaro (Burg Unterwalden). The Rigi is a quite well-known 1800m mountain in the pre-Alps, occupying a spectacular location above the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne) and offering on a clear day splendid views south to the Alps as well as north back to the area around Zurich. In 1036, Schloss Lenzburg was used for the first time as seat for the count of Lenzburg. Those were important fiefs at the time. The house died out in 1173, and the castle was then transferred to emperor Barbarossa. In the following period, it was mainly used by the Kyburger house. The Habsburger took over the castle in 1273. There is a "new" competitor in the Switzerland online-map-business. Google has released detailed satelite-maps for Switzerland today (only zurich with the highest resolution). Google has no Traffic maps online now, but very high-resolution images of zurich.
